Efficiency:

Effectiveness

Hundreds of reports but no insights?

Most organisations have a major problems with their data. No matter how many reports are generated they cannot get enough insight into what is driving the business.

Transactional systems such as POS, Sales & Distribution and General Ledgers are all designed to capture data not release it. So most organisations either replace their transaction processing system or, as the current trend suggests, add "business intelligence" tools to enhance their reporting.

In reality what is needed is an integrated approach that aligns day to day operations with strategic plans. This approach is known as Business Performance Management or BPM and encompasses integrated reporting, analysis, budgeting and forecasting.

From many years of experience in reporting, budgeting and forecasting systems we have divided information system requirements into two categories: Efficiency or Effectiveness.

Efficiency can be defined as "doing things right"
Effectiveness on the other hand can be defined as "doing the right things".

Why is it so important to make this distinction? Most organisations, especially Small to Medium Enterprises (SME’s) are still stuck in the "efficiency stage" of their reporting, analysis, and budgeting functions whereas organisations seeking competitive advantage in every facet of their business are already at the "effectiveness" stage.

Reduction in time spent on reporting is the immediate benefit everyone wants from our products. This is Efficiency. Many business intelligence solutions provide this. However, we believe that efficiency in reporting is only 20% of what we do. Our value is from the effectiveness perspective.

Effectiveness relates to the ability to use information and processes to add value to the business via the alignment of strategies and tactics. Essentially this is a more proactive, “go forward” approach.

Imagine creating complex reports yourself with drag & drop ease then entering Sales forecast numbers against products, stores, or sales reps into a centralised database for all to use….without having to send that spreadsheet through email (and worrying about who has the final numbers)
